| Albissola Marina
shares together with Albisola Superiore the same origins and
same historical events identifying itself with Alba Docilia, an old station
or resting place. Soon after the barbaric invasions the population settled into 2 separate
places: the upper village with the ruins of the castle placed on the Castellaro hill belonging
to the noble families and the lower village on the sea. The economy was mainly based on agriculture,
fishing and the pottery production. In Albisola the production of ceramics was supported
by some natural elements such as the presence of red clay and white earth found in the surrounding
plains and hills, the extensive woods on the near slopes and by the sea in front of a wide
beach which facilitated the drying process and the loading of the newly handmade articles . At
the beginning of the XVI century the two villages split down and became two independent municipalities.
Until 1798 the municipal possessions belonged to the Podesta's jurisdiction of Varazze
and afterwards to Savona. During the XVII and XVIII centuries some noble families chose Albisola
as their holiday resort and built some superb villa such as Villa Durazzo-Faraggiana, Villa
De Mari-Puccio, Villa Gentile. Albissola Marina becomes very popular worldwide thanks to
its skilful artists and its pottery shops which have constituted
along the centuries the main economic resource. Albissola Marina
belongs to the Italian Pottery Association. The little town
is about 4 km from Savona and 45 km from Genoa, it's surrounded
towards the mountains by green hills and has a wide and thin
beach 1300 mt. long extremely equipped; the soundings are very
sandy and one has the possibility to dive and have a look to
the whales being not very far from the "Whales Sanctuary". |
